Online agro-environmental resource launchedDate posted: February 20, 2007A new Web-based database of Alberta agro-environmental resources is expected to become a valuable opportunity for the agricultural industry. The site, EnviroAg Connect, was launched by three industry stakeholders in partnership: Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture (AESA), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada – Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA), and the Alberta Environmental Farm Plan Company (AEFP). The goal of the site is to make it easier for industry professionals who work directly with producers to find the necessary information, instruction, support and/or funding for their clients to make environmental improvements on their clients' farms. As well, the site is designed to make it easy for people with resources to register their information in the database. The foundation of the database is now complete and needs the information contributions of industry players to help it reach its potential. "The initial stage of the database is an opportunity for any organization or person, public or private, with related environmental services and information to increase access to their information by posting on EnviroAg Connect," says Mike Slomp, AEFP executive director. Anchored at www.EnviroAgConnect.ca, the database brings resources together in a searchable, user-friendly format. There are several broad categories of resources including: people, events, courses, directories, funding and Web sites. This listing can be expanded if suppliers who don't fit under these categories apply to be listed on the site. The database is designed to be easy to use. Visitors will be able to search by management practices, type of resource or both and know quickly what resources (people, funding, etc) are out there to help support their client in adopting beneficial management practices. In response to consumer and industry trends, more and more farmers are identifying and addressing environmental risks on their farms. A common obstacle these farmers run into is where to find help and guidance to address these risks. EnviroAg Connect was created to remove that obstacle. EnviroAg Connect is specific to Alberta, agriculture and the environment. It is expected to become a valuable tool for extension agents, consultants, agrologists and farmers. The site is a great complement to broader Web sites and databases such as the Alberta Stewardship Network. Go to www.EnviroAgConnect.ca to submit a resource and take advantage of this opportunity.
