VIDO granted new Saskatchewan funding to battle infectious diseases

Date posted: October 2, 2006

The University of Saskatchewan's Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) has received new funding from the Province of Saskatchewan to support its work battling infectious diseases.

"This province's support enables us to continue to retain scientists and staff in Saskatchewan, and to provide a world-class research environment that supports our progress in the prevention of infectious disease," says VIDO director Dr. Lorne Babiuk.

The new provincial funding is slated at $1.5 million over five years. The funding will be used to support VIDO's scientific, communications and clerical staff, and to fund ongoing research and development.

Current areas of VIDO research include: enhancement of vaccine efficiency; development of single-dose vaccines, vaccines for food and water safety; vaccines against influenza, hepatitis C and SARS; development of neonatal vaccines; the improvement of early childhood vaccines; and the development of novel approaches to infectious disease control.

A Government of Saskatchewan news release on the funding announcement, along with more information on VIDO, is available on the VIDO Web site, at www.vido.org.
