Transportation sector key partner in livestock welfareMay 10, 2005: Ensuring proper care of livestock is far from just an on-farm challenge, says Tim O'Byrne, who has investigated the livestock welfare transportation issue for many years in Alberta and is now based in the U.S. O'Byrne spoke at the recent Livestock Care Conference in Red Deer. "One of the greatest benefits of our work in the transportation area has been to better understand the complex relocation process," he says. "Also, we have established a strong communication link between the transportation sector and the livestock industry that will be essential to implementing realistic, proactive animal care initiatives in that area." More information on livestock transportation as it relates to animal care is available on the Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) Web site. Field view: wheat researchers making Fusarium progressMay 10, 2005: How are things going in the quest for wheat with stronger Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance? Dennis Green, who has as an up-close look at the latest material says researchers are making headway. "It's been a long haul, but its very clear over the past few years that there's getting to be substantially more resistance in the germplasm," says Green, senior technician at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Cereal Research Centre in Winnipeg, who helps direct a team selecting material for FHB resistance. "Obviously Fusarium is a major problem for producers and it's a very tough research challenge, but we've made steady progress." A crucial resource for researchers are FHB nurseries located in at Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, Carman and Minto. More information in Western Grains Research Magazine. Asian market liking new hard white wheatMay 10, 2005: Speaking at CWB Day during Crop Production Week, Dr. Soon-Bin Neoh, Managing Director of the Seberang Flour Mill in Malaysia praised the new Canada Western Hard White (CWHW) wheat class. The first major variety, Snowbird, developed with support from the WGRF Wheat Check-off Fund, performed well in testing by Seberang. While there's a long road ahead to establish the new class, it holds significant long-term promise to cut into Australia's dominance of wheat exports to the region.
